These 5 Things Disconnect You From Your Higher Self

(Published here on Medium)

Our soul is on one side, and our ego is on the other. It is a choice, neither right nor wrong, as to who we want to spend our lives being led by. One will bring a great deal more suffering, and the other has the map to our best most joyful and fulfilled life. Each of us gets to decide with whom we align with.

A daily meditation practice is an excellent way to practice connecting to your highest self. Through meditation, we can be the observer of all the habitual thoughts and behaviors of the ego. When we connect to the observer (higher, soul self), we understand that the ego is not us and we do not have to follow it’s often destructive thoughts.

To better align with your highest self, notice if you are engaging in any of these egoic activities that your higher self has no part of.

1. Judgement. Your highest self does not judge others, or you for anything. Judgment does not exist in the highest vibration. The soul is love, light, and peace, and understands that beneath everyone’s wounding, so are they. Our higher self also understands that we are all on our own journey. If you notice that you are judging others, you are likely judging yourself for something that you may see reflected in them. For example, if you are judging someone for being overtly sexual, perhaps it is because you have repressed this aspect of yourself. Regardless, any judgment is not something your higher, soul self is participating in.

“The ego cannot survive without judgment. The ego seeks to divide and separate. Spirit seeks to unify and heal.”

~ Gabrielle Bernstein

2. Control. Our highest self understands that surrendering is essential to allow all the good things to come into our life. The soul knows that to live fully is to be in flow, and to control is like trying to paddle upstream. Control is an unnecessary and futile battle. Our soul has the map to our best life (see this previous article). When we surrender our ego’s need to control, we effortlessly flow toward beautiful places our ego couldn’t possibly dream up for us. Align with your highest self by surrendering control.

“The moment of surrender is not when life is over, it’s when it begins.”

~ Marianne Williamson

3. Blame. One of the biggest ways we can stay stuck in life is by holding onto blame. When we are in victim mode, we are powerless. Blame is a low vibrational energy that our higher self does not entertain. If we are blaming anyone for anything, we are alone with the ego. This doesn’t negate the fact that we may have been victim at some point in our lives.

It means we don’t need to stay a victim. Our soul understands that there is a lesson in every experience, and it is all part of life. Find a way to forgive, and you will let go of dense energy and ascend into further alignment with your highest self.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”

~ Lewis B. Smedes

4. Attachment. Any attachment limits us, as it implies that we need something outside of ourselves to make us feel more complete. This could be material objects we hold onto, people or ideas we cling to, or substance addictions we falsely believe are filling a void.

Our highest self knows that we are complete just as we are. When you practice being with your soul self, the knowing of the love you have and already are is deeply profound. The highest self is fulfilled and complete and connected to the divine. Once you align consistently, things you thought you needed will naturally fall away and you’ll open up space to receive what truly fulfills you.

“In the process of letting go, you will lose many things from the past, but you will find yourself.”

~ Deepak Chopra

5. Negative thinking. Your higher, soul self is not capable of negative thoughts. The soul resides in love, light and peace. Negative thoughts are a habit of the ego passed down through generations of traumatized people and a chaotic society. Worry, resentment, shame, and unfounded fears are all just habitual thoughts that can be rewritten. To align with your highest self, find a way to rewrite the script that plays in your mind. Most of those thoughts are habitual, and habits can be changed. A daily gratitude list can be very helpful for this.

Get to know what it feels like to be aligned with your higher self. Recognize when you engage in thoughts and activities that your soul is not participating in. You will feel expansive and at peace in your body when you are in alignment with your highest. You will feel tense and tight and contracted when you are lost in dark thoughts.

It doesn’t mean that we won’t ever feel low. Life still happens, and we are here to feel and experience it all. It just means we won’t get lost for long in the spinning darkness of the ego, as we are more practiced at connecting to our higher self.

I have lived most of my life lost in the ego mind, then after some devotion, realization, and healing, I am guided by my soul. I make time every day no matter what to plug in to my soul self. And my life is unbelievably better with my soul at the helm.

There are many activities you can engage in that will foster your connection with your higher self. Whatever lights you up and creates loving, expansive, good feelings in your body is a great clue.

For me that is hiking, gardening, writing, meditation, and yoga. Among other things…

What fills you up and connects you to your highest self?
